About us

Showing up, again and again.

One Man Can Make a Difference is a Florida community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We serve Black children and families in Florida City, Goulds, Perrine and South Miami — meeting the need in front of us, and staying long enough for it to matter.

The idea

The name is the whole argument.

Not a system. Not a campaign. One person who decides that a child in their own neighborhood will not go hungry, will not fall behind alone, and will not grow up believing the world is small.

That conviction scales the only way it can: one more adult, one more moment of service, one more family who knows where to go. We would rather be known by a handful of families for a decade than by a county for a season.

So the work stays close to the ground. Food and clothing where they are needed. Tutoring at the kitchen-table level. Mentors who remember what a child said last month. Trips that turn an abstraction — the zoo, the stadium, the college campus — into a memory.

What we believe

Four commitments we will be held to.

  • i Dignity No family should have to perform their hardship to be helped. Meals and clothing are given quietly, respectfully, and without strings. We do not photograph need to raise money from it.
  • ii Belonging Children do their best growing inside a circle that already accepts them. We build the circle first: familiar adults, familiar rhythm, a place where a young person is recognized on sight.
  • iii Aspiration Horizons are taught. A tutor, a guest speaker, a day at a campus or a park — each one quietly enlarges the set of futures a child can imagine choosing.
  • iv Patience Real change in a young life is measured in years, not quarters. We plan to be there for the long middle of the story, not only the moments worth announcing.

How we work

Start with the need. Stay for the childhood.

We begin where the need is loudest. Hunger and a missing pair of school shoes come before anything else; a child cannot study past an empty stomach.

We keep the door open after the crisis. The same child who came for a meal is welcome at tutoring, at practice, on the bus to the zoo, and in a mentor relationship that outlasts a school year.

We widen the world on purpose. Professionals from the community, trips beyond the block, and honest college preparation are all one idea: that a young person should be able to picture themselves somewhere they have never been.

Who we serve

Children, and the families around them.

Students from elementary school through high school, and the parents, grandparents and guardians raising them across four South Miami-Dade neighborhoods.

  • Florida City
  • Goulds
  • Perrine
  • South Miami

Supporting a child means supporting a household. Groceries for a family, clothing for siblings, a picnic that gives tired parents an easy afternoon — all of it belongs to the same work.

What this site does not claim

This is a design preview, and we would rather be trusted than impressive. So we have deliberately left out everything we cannot yet verify in writing.

You will find no participant counts, no financial figures, no founding dates, no staff roster, no testimonials, no donor outcomes and no endorsement claims anywhere on these pages. Program days, locations and seasons are set with our partners and will be published here only once they are confirmed.

College preparation means preparation. We do not promise admission, placement, scholarships or financial awards — only honest help with the work and company along the way.

All imagery and the film are illustrative artwork. They do not show actual program participants, staff or events.

If you live nearby, you are already qualified to help.
